  The only possibility to create a sense of movement with a central perspective is to divert attention directly upwards or downwards. This is achieved through a viewpoint fundamental to all architecture which renders it invisible. The movement is diverted from the time component and allows the empty space which is the boundless sky to force itself into the forefront.
Still life paintings with pipes exist by Georges Braque, August Macke, Van Gogh, Felix Nussbaum and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. A pipe does not feature directly in this picture, hence it reflects the literal meaning of Magritte’s “Ceci n'est pas une pipe”. The buildings are, after all, invisible.
